Technical Testing
Thursday, 09 October 2008

Continuing improvement in existing products and new developments are essential if manufactures are to maintain their position in an increasing competitive marketplace. Quality and reliability of products must be guaranteed by correct design and material selection, and by effective process control. Proper selection of the materials for a particular component requires complete knowledge of the expected service conditions, e.g., stress levels, temperature, environment, etc. and a clear understanding of the structure-property-processing relationships of the materials under consideration. Ideally manufacturers would prefer to use "robust" materials whose properties and hence service performance is relatively insensitive to variations during processing.

In order to understand such structure-property relationships and their dependence on processing conditions during manufacture, it is necessary to employ a wide range of sophisticated materials characterization equipment. Such techniques depend upon considerable knowledge and experience of the technical and research staff involved.
The MTEC's Technical Service Unit provides a service from more than 20 laboratories which combine the use of state-of-the-art equipment and analytical techniques with expertise in the area of materials characterization. The main objective of the service is to provide technical assistance in materials R&D for both public and private sectors.

With the full capacity of laboratories and experts in the field, MTEC offers a wide range of services such as materials characterization and testing, product analysis, technical problem solving, technical information as well as consultation and contracted research.
