April 28, 2017 at Prince Palace Hotel, Bangkok – National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in collaboration with the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy under financial support from Energy Conservation (ENCON) Fund hold a press release on the progress and MOU signing ceremony of the project “Implementation of Higher Blend of Biodiesel” via H-FMAE technology, which has resulted from Thailand-Japan collaboration, with 2 biodiesel manufacturers, namely Bangchak Biofuel Company Limited (BBF) and Global Green Chemicals Public Company Limited (GGC). This collaborative project aims to provide technology option for increasing biodiesel blend in the future.

Dr. Aree Thanaboonsombut, MTEC Deputy Executive Director, said that “MTEC is a member of NSTDA within MOST with main role in research and development, as well as implementing research output to create both economic and social values”

The project “Implementation of Higher Blend of Biodiesel” was funded by Energy Conservation (ENCON) Fund via Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) to demonstrate H-FAME technology from Thai-Japan collaboration (JST-JICA SATREPS) as one of the technology option to upgrade biodiesel for higher blend.

“Since the beginning, stakeholder meeting was held to inform all information related to the project with detailed methodology and criteria to select 2 biodiesel manufacturers to receive technology transfer in the project. Bangchak Biofuel Company Limited (BBF) and Global Green Chemicals Public Company Limited (GGC) were selected to receive H-FAME technology transfer to improve current biodiesel quality in response to request from automotive companies in order to gain public confidence to use higher blend of biodiesel. This project will pioneer the use of B10 fuel with high quality biodiesel from the project in the governmental vehicles, which will be another press release.” Dr. Aree Thanaboonsombut said.

Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Principal Researcher and Project Leader from MTEC/NSTDA, said that the project steering committee has considered all biodiesel companies under technical criteria, where the research team will help selected two biodiesel companies investigate both technical and economic aspects of H-FAME demonstration process. H-FAME will be blended with diesel at 10% with quality benchmarked to biodiesel standard imposed by Department of Energy Business (DOEB), where B10 is subjected to test in pick-up truck. In addition, the project will sample biodiesel and diesel from the storage and the distribution system for quality checking according to the standard in order to establish confidence from automotive industry and general customers to use B10 in the future.”

Mr. Tanachit Makaranon, Managing Director of Bangchak Biofuel Company Limited (BBF), said that as a biodiesel producer, BBF is ready to join the project to investigate how to upgrade biodiesel to the level that automotive companies have proposed. Upgrading of biodiesel can be done in many different ways with pro and con, where H-FAME is one of such technology. BBF will support H-FAME production in the demonstration level to find out production cost and economic benefit for the government and private sector to choose in the future. Furthermore, H-FAME produced from BBF will be blended and tested in vehicle on-road to raise public awareness and confidence of using higher blend of biodiesel in the future.

Mr. Chirawat Nuritanon, Managing Director of Global Green Chemicals Public Company Limited (GGC) said that as one of the large biodiesel producer, GGC has joined the project to upgrade biodiesel quality to gain confidence from biodiesel user in the future. One of the potential technology to upgrade biodiesel quality is H-FAME, which has been limited to lab-scale only, and has not been proven in the engine test for a long distance. It is thus a challenge for R&D to explore new technology to upgrade biodiesel quality in GGC.
