Research background<\/span><\/h3>
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>

Records from the Road Safety Thailand indicates\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that the most common and severe forms of accidents are\u00a0<\/span>trucks undergoing rear-end collision or side collision while\u00a0<\/span>parking on the hard shoulder. These accidents mostly\u00a0<\/span>happen at night and at least 60 accidents happen per year\u00a0<\/span>with an average of one death per week.<\/span><\/p>

Apart from solving these problems by providing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>parking areas, there are also effective technical methods\u00a0<\/span>used in foreign countries, namely, installing the underrun\u00a0<\/span>protection devices on the side and rear of the truck to\u00a0<\/span>prevent the vehicle that crashes into it from getting crushed\u00a0<\/span>underneath.<\/span><\/p>

So far, many truck manufacturers in Thailand have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>installed the protective devices on the side (Lateral Underrun\u00a0<\/span>Protection Device, LUPD) and the rear (Rear Underrun\u00a0<\/span>Protection Device, RUPD). However, these devices are\u00a0<\/span>not so widespread and are not subject to standards.\u00a0<\/span>The research team, therefore, had developed the\u00a0<\/span>engineering design of these protective devices\u00a0<\/span>conforming to the internationally accepted standards\u00a0<\/span>by cooperating with the Automotive Engineering Bureau\u00a0<\/span>of the Department of Land Transport and representatives\u00a0<\/span>from truck manufacturers.<\/span><\/p>

Research objective<\/span><\/h2>

The research team plans to develop the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>engineering design of the side and rear protective devices,\u00a0<\/span>as well as drafts the regulations of these devices used\u00a0<\/span>for transporting animals or goods, and the regulations of\u00a0<\/span>production inspection and installation for the side and\u00a0<\/span>rear protective devices. These regulations, once legalized,\u00a0<\/span>constitute a guideline for truck manufacturers in Thailand.<\/span><\/p>

What does the research team do?<\/h2>

1. Study of the international standards related to the designation of the side and rear protective devices,\u00a0<\/span>such as UN R58 and UN R73.<\/span><\/p>

2. Study on the problems and finding solutions with truck manufacturers in Thailand and the Department\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of Land Transport.<\/span><\/p>

3. Application of the Morphological matrix or the combination of sub-functions of the individual parts to be able\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to interchange with the main parts for the design of the side and rear protective devices of the trucks in Thailand with\u00a0<\/span>7 styles, totaling 90 designs for a ready-for-production engineering design.<\/span><\/p>

4. Analysis and testing of prototypes conforming to the regulations in the standard.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

5. Planning of the testing process for certification.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

6.
