Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(AOT) operates an airport service business complying\u00a0<\/span>with the country\u2019s air transport policy. AOT is a state\u00a0<\/span>enterprise under the supervision of the Ministry of\u00a0<\/span>Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand,\u00a0<\/span>which are the country\u2019s aviation regulators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On September 28, 2006, Suvarnabhumi airport\u00a0<\/span>was officially opened for all international commercial\u00a0<\/span>flights. The government had established it as the main\u00a0<\/span>Bangkok international airport in place of Don Mueang\u00a0<\/span>International airport and aimed it to be the hub of\u00a0<\/span>aviation in Asia. Inevitably, the airport area and its\u00a0<\/span>surroundings soon had been receiving negative impacts,\u00a0<\/span>such as noise pollution and air pollution, as well as\u00a0<\/span>aviation safety issues.<\/span><\/p>

The Ground Run-up Enclosures (GRE)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at Suvarnabhumi airport has been constructed to\u00a0<\/span>test the operation of jet engines after an aircraft\u00a0<\/span>undergoes maintenance and the engine performance\u00a0<\/span>under the conditions of normal use and maximum\u00a0<\/span>power during take off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To study the effects of GRE operation on\u00a0<\/span>aviation safety, AOT had cooperated with MTEC\u00a0<\/span>in applying computer-aided engineering as a tool\u00a0<\/span>for fluid dynamics analysis of the simulated airflow\u00a0<\/span>behavior during the jet test.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Commander (CDR) Sutheerawat Suwanawat, General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Suvarnabhumi Airport aims to be a hub airport that can support large aircrafts. One of the requirements to\u00a0<\/span>achieve this goal is that there must be a GRE for aircraft engine maintenance and testing, which has been used\u00a0<\/span>worldwide and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). There are issues regarding the suitability\u00a0<\/span>of the location of the testing station at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The decision was thus made that an agency with\u00a0<\/span>technical competence, therefore, should provide assistance in this matter, assess all possible impacts and make\u00a0<\/span>recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

MTEC research team had done a very good job. AOT had received crucial information for the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>consideration of using the testing station and the feasibility of relocating the GRE to a more appropriate\u00a0<\/span>location. The results of this study will be given to all stakeholders for collaborative consideration.\u00a0<\/span>The methodology used in this study could be employed for use with other GREs around the world.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the future, the aviation business will focus <\/span><\/font>more on safety and sustainability and Thailand should <\/span>raise its technological capability in order to reduce its <\/span>dependence on foreign countries. Some technologies <\/span>could be developed in-house, but others have to be <\/span>transferred from foreign countries and then further <\/span>developed into our own knowledge and skills. Certain <\/span>issues could also be supported by MTEC, such as safety <\/span>and environmental studies. AOT also plans to develop <\/span>the airport into a \u201cGreen Airport\u201d. All these goals are <\/span>global future trends. <\/span><\/p>

Lastly, AOT greatly appreciates working with <\/span>MTEC since the results are not only in line with AOT\u2019s <\/span>plan within the specified time, but also valuable as <\/span>a basis for AOT\u2019s capability building.
