Dr. Aree Thanaboonsombut, Deputy Executive Director, National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), presided over “ASEAN Sustainable and Environmental Materials Workshop” organized by MTEC. The event was attended by more than 80 participants, and 13 speakers in 11 countries such as Japan, Belgium, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.

The purpose of this workshop is to trigger the exchange of ideas in the fields of waste management, e.g., processing of wastes, recycling, innovative technology and conversion to energy. It also facilitates the exchange of knowledge, know-how and technology in mitigating environmental problems focusing on waste management affecting environmental quality, human health and economy in ASEAN countries and Japan. Throughout the platform of discussion, a well-structured settlement of waste management and governance (institutions, policy, and regulations) has been developed to tackle with the waste problems.

Moreover, this workshop is a parallel event to the ASEAN NEXT 2019, organized Thailand Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) under the theme of STI Leading towards Community Happiness. The aims are to extend networks among ASEAN communities and Japan, and promote sustainable development of socio-economy in the ASEAN region.
