On March 4, 2024, at the press conference room on the 1st floor, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), Professor Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong, Director of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Dr. Suthee Phoojaruenchanachai, Deputy Director of the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Director of the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), accompanied by a team of researchers from NSTDA and partner agencies, held a press conference on the organization of the 19th NSTDA Annual Conference (NAC2024).<\/span><\/p>

Aligned with the theme \u201cEmpowering Strength, Creating Research, Transforming the Thai Economy and Society with BCG Implementation,\u201d NAC2024 would be held from March 28th<\/sup>\u00a0to 30th<\/sup>, 2024, at the Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Province.<\/span><\/p>

NSTDA Director emphasized the agency\u2019s role, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), as a \u2018national powerhouse in science, technology, and innovation (STI).\u2019 \u00a0They highlighted NSTDA\u2019s work in fostering a robust \u2018research and innovation ecosystem\u2019 for Thailand\u2019s development.\u201d This initiative aspires to propel Thailand\u2019s economy on an exponential growth trajectory by leveraging NSTDA\u2019s expertise and capabilities.\u00a0 Through the BCG Implementation plan, it aims to deliver widespread benefits across the nation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

This year\u2019s NSTDA Annual Conference (NAC) focused on \u2018Empowering Strength, Creating Research, Transforming the Thai Economy and Society with BCG Implementation.\u2019 \u00a0The conference served as a platform to showcase the groundbreaking research and development (R&D) achievements of NSTDA and its collaborators. It facilitates the dissemination of knowledge across various fields in science, technology, and innovation (STI). Aligned with Thailand\u2019s BCG economic model, NAC2024\u2019s goals addressed key national priorities: reducing social inequality, accelerating economic growth, fostering self-sufficiency, and promoting environmental sustainability. These efforts ultimately aim to enhance the quality of life for all Thais. \u00a0Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who granted royal patronage, presided over the opening ceremony and visited the exhibition on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. \u2018The event can be followed live on channel 2HD through the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT),\u2019 noted the director of NSTDA.<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Suthee Phoojaruenchanachai, Deputy Director of the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), NSTDA, stated that \u201cNAC2024 will focus on showcasing the potential of STI at NSTDA through research outputs presented in both seminar-style meetings and exhibitions. Beyond the distinguished exhibition \u2019Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Thai Science and Technology,\u2019 NAC2024 will also showcase the advancements in scientific research and technological development achieved by NSTDA researchers; this comprehensive exhibition will feature 57 groundbreaking works, representing collaborations between researchers from all five national research centers, public sector partners, educational institutions, private companies, and local communities across Thailand. This exhibition will showcase both impactful research with proven benefits and promising findings ready for real-world application. The exhibition will feature impactful research with demonstrably positive outcomes, alongside research nearing completion and poised for real-world application.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cOutstanding research examples included the development of vaccines for livestock, such as the prototype vaccine developed by the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC). This prototype vaccine serves as a model for preventing outbreaks of diseases caused by indigenous strains of viruses in pigs across Thailand. This highly safe vaccine for pigs demonstrates superior immune stimulation against the virus compared to other vaccine formats. This vaccine holds promise for commercial scalability due to safety and preliminary efficacy testing conducted in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Development, utilizing standard laboratory facilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThe National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) has developed high-quality screening kits for early detection and monitoring of chronic kidney disease and diabetes-related complications (AL-Strip and GO-SENSOR). These rapid screening kits are designed for self-testing and laboratory-level testing, offering ease of use, accuracy, and affordability. These tools enhance access to early-stage kidney impairment screening, thereby supporting government policies promoting preventive healthcare for chronic kidney disease among the Thai population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

In addition, the \u2018Thai School Lunch for BMA\u2019 project by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) is a breakfast-lunch meal management system for schools under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration\u2019s (BMA) jurisdiction. This system enables real-time monitoring, evaluation of food quality, and management of school meals, addressing nutritional needs and expenditure concerns. \u00a0Developed by the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), Lookie Waste is a mobile application that empowers users to track their food waste and food packaging. It aims to raise awareness among consumers about the amount of food waste and packaging generated in their daily lives. Developed by the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC) in collaboration with development partners, EnPAT is a difficult-to-ignite type of biomass-based electric power generator. It features a high ignition point of over 300 degrees Celsius, capable of preventing accidents in the event of a biomass power generator explosion, thereby maximizing safety for the lives and properties of the people.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

Moreover, there are presentations of successful examples from private companies within the Thailand Science Park (TSP). One is Nano Coding Tech Co., Ltd., a Thai deep tech startup that has benefited and created business opportunities by becoming a part of TSP. This includes strategic planning, incubation, business skill enhancement training, and opportunities for linking funds domestically and internationally. Recently, they have been selected as one of the Hong Kong Science Park startups, receiving funding to expand into international markets.<\/span><\/p>

For private sector representatives or entrepreneurs seeking to innovate their businesses, NAC2024 offers a valuable service through Connex Center. This center acts as a bridge between NSTDA\u2019s science and technology resources and the business sector. As a comprehensive service, Connex Center connects businesses with knowledge, research, and funding sources. Additionally, it serves as a platform for tailored consultations by experts in research and development (R&D) and commercialization.<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Director of the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), NSTDA, noted that another popular highlight at NAC, which attracts participants every year, is the seminar topics aligned with contemporary issues such as global warming, environmental degradation, and rapidly changing trends in technology research. \u00a0NAC2024, therefore, features several interesting seminar topics presented by researchers from the 5 national centers and honored by speakers from partner organizations of NSTDA, both domestically and internationally. \u00a0A panel of renowned experts, each with extensive experience in their fields, will share insights on over 40 diverse topics. This platform fosters the exchange of knowledge and experiences gleaned from research, development, and innovation. Some of the topics include:<\/span><\/p>

On the environmental issue, NAC2024 tackles challenges by exploring measures to support the Thai industry in adapting to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) while transitioning towards a circular economy model. NAC2024 also features discussions on climate change adaptation strategies, focusing on improving community water quality through science and technology (S&T) solutions.\u00a0 Additionally, the conference addresses air pollution, exploring both the problems it creates and potential coping strategies. On the healthcare issue, NAC2024 explores 3 key areas, including Digital health technology, Genomics Thailand, and Pharma NETwork. The conference additionally explores advancements in health and beauty, showcasing the development of innovative, high-value herbal extracts that can elevate the industry.<\/span><\/p>

Furthermore, an Open House activity will be hosted by NSTDA and the Thai Science Park Community, welcoming entrepreneurs, industrialists, and investors to visit essential science infrastructure facilities in the country. This provides an opportunity to experience firsthand the technology demonstrations by research personnel and NSTDA research laboratories. Visitors can also view innovative works from tenant companies within the Thai Science Park and business solution innovations from leading technology companies to enhance businesses\u2019 potential and profitability. Another event highlight is the NAC Market, which will showcase innovative products developed from various research and service activities of NSTDA, as well as community products and other items at exceptional prices. \u00a0Lastly, there will be activities promoting learning in science and technology for youth and seminars for educators, educational personnel, and the public.
