Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of the bone and its marrow contents caused by infection leading to bone necrosis and destruction which could lead to death or amputation if not cured. High dose and prolong systemic antibiotic are; thus, often administrated for effective eradication of the bacteria which may induce toxicity to the patients. To overcome these risks, it has been shown that the use of local antibiotic delivery was able to eradicate or suppress the infectious process in the patients with osteomyelitis effectively, minimizing systemic complications and enhancing clinical efficacy by locally providing sustained and high concentrations of antibiotic to the area of infection without systemically exposing patients to antibiotic levels that often would result in numerous toxic side effects.

Project Details
National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) has cooperated with Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University to develop a antibiotics impregnated hydroxyapatite beads for bone and joint infection treatment. The advantage of this technology is that there is no need for re-operation to remove the beads as in the case of PMMA-antibiotic impregnated beads since hydroxyapatite also acts as bone substituted implantwhich can resorb and encourage new bone formation,

No complication or body rejection from using these antibiotic impregnated hydroxyapatite beads was observed. All patients recovered Well and the osteomyelitis was successfully cured. Bone fusion at the defect was also detected resulting in the recovery of organ function. The use of these antibiotic impregnated hydroxyapatite beads could decrease numbers of surgical intervention and systemic antibiotics administration which led to the increase in times for physicians to treat other patients. This also decreases the amount of imported products and will be beneficial to Thailand public health communityespecially the rural hospital which limited budget.
