Waste Flow and End-of-Life Environmental Impacts of Packaging Waste toward a Circular Economy in Tourism Accommodations: A Case Study in Northeastern Thailand
ปี 2026 | เอกสารทางวิชาการ
Packaging waste from tourism accommodations exerts significant environmental burdens. Analyzing waste generation patterns and the associated waste flows is essential for identifying the dominant waste streams and the factors that influence them. This process provides valuable insights for developing effective waste management strategies. This study aims to assess the waste flow and end-of-life environmental impacts of packaging waste generated by tourism accommodations in five provinces in Northeastern Thailand. A questionnaire survey was conducted across 35 accommodations to collect packaging waste data, and the environmental impacts of end-of-life waste management scenarios were evaluated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in SimaPro with the ReCiPe impact assessment. The results indicate that the total packaging waste amount to 891.53 kg per day, with an average of 0.26 kg generated per guest per day. Plastic and glass packaging constitute a significant portion of waste generated by tourist accommodations. Glass bottles, predominantly from the dining area, represent the largest portion of this packaging waste. In terms of waste collection patterns, recycling is the primary approach, particularly concerning PET and glass. Under the end-of-life management scenario evaluated in this study, aluminum packaging waste showed a net Climate Change impact of −17.89 kg CO₂ eq/kg packaging waste, reflecting the environmental benefits of the current
recycling system. Tourist accommodations should focus on diverting more packaging waste from landfills to promote sustainable waste management. This study provides comprehensive guidelines aimed at establishing concrete targets for packaging waste reduction.
