MTEC, NSTDA Discusses Carbon Credit Methodology Development with Asia Carbon Institute and Participates in IETA Asia Climate Summit 2026

On July 8, 2026, a research team from the Technology and Informatics Institute for Sustainability (TIIS), National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), participated in the ACI × NSTDA Methodology Implementation Workshop, held as part of the IETA Asia Climate Summit (ACS) 2026 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The workshop provided a platform to exchange information and discuss potential collaboration on carbon credit methodology development between NSTDA and the Asia Carbon Institute (ACI).

During the meeting, John Lo, Founder of the Asia Carbon Institute, presented ACI’s methodology development approach and its methodology review process, covering methodology drafting, stakeholder consultation, independent expert review, and the organization’s methodology approval process.

On the same occasion, Dr. Nongnuch Poolsawad, Director of the Technology and Informatics Institute for Sustainability (TIIS), outlined NSTDA’s direction and capabilities in carbon credit research and development, and proposed a framework for collaboration between NSTDA and ACI to support the development of credible methodologies applicable across Asia.

Ms. Prakaitham Suksathit, Senior Research Assistant, presented progress on Thailand’s Premium and Standard T-VER Biochar Carbon Sequestration Methodology, Thailand’s methodology for carbon sequestration through biochar. She also exchanged views on possible approaches to enhancing the methodology in line with ACI’s methodology development framework, with the aim of supporting broader application at the regional level.

Meanwhile, Ms. Jantima Samniangngam, Senior Research Assistant, presented Thailand’s Standard T-VER: Management of Food Surplus and Utilization as Donation for Human Consumption methodology, which is designed to assess greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from food donation, thereby helping to reduce food waste and support circular economy principles. The discussion also explored ways to further develop Thailand’s methodology in alignment with ACI’s methodology development framework for potential application within the ASEAN region.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on potential next steps for collaboration, including establishing a Joint Technical Working Group to advance methodology development, feasibility studies for jointly developing draft methodologies, pilot project development, and knowledge exchange on Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV). These matters remain under discussion as both parties work toward defining a more concrete framework and direction for future cooperation.

The meeting marked another important step in strengthening international networks for research and carbon credit methodology development between Thailand and international organizations. It also aligns with MTEC’s Material Solution for Net Zero strategy, which supports the development of technologies and data infrastructure to help drive Thailand toward Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero Emissions.
