The National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), convened Meeting No. 1/2026 of the Thailand PPWR Consortium working groups in a hybrid format. Representatives from government agencies, industry, academic institutions, and relevant organizations participated in the meeting to jointly establish operational directions and prepare Thailand for the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Assoc. Prof. Toemsak Srikhirin, Executive Director of MTEC, NSTDA, delivered the welcoming remarks.
The meeting was held as part of the Thailand PPWR Consortium, which aims to serve as a central platform for exchanging knowledge, information, and experience across sectors. The consortium supports the development of Thailand’s capacity to meet new packaging and environmental requirements while promoting infrastructure, tools, and implementation approaches aligned with international standards.
The event began with a presentation on the Thailand PPWR Consortium’s operational approach, followed by workshops conducted by its three principal working groups. WG1: Packaging Design & Implementation focuses on supporting packaging design and development in compliance with sustainability requirements. WG2: Infrastructure – Data, Testing and Conformity Assessment focuses on developing infrastructure for data, testing, and conformity assessment. WG3: Policy & Outreach focuses on policy monitoring, communication, and stakeholder awareness. Participants exchanged views, established courses of action, and discussed priority issues requiring accelerated progress within each task group so that the consortium can respond to PPWR requirements in practical terms. Each working group will proceed with activities under its agreed work plan, while joint follow-up meetings will be held every two months to present progress, integrate information, and maintain continuous momentum.
The Thailand PPWR Consortium represents an important collaboration that reflects MTEC’s role under NSTDA in advancing research, technology, and innovation to help Thai industry adapt to rapidly evolving international regulations and standards. It also promotes economic growth alongside sustainable environmental stewardship, contributing to Thailand’s long-term capacity and competitiveness.
