Prototype Name

Lightweight Aluminum Bus Structure

This prototype was a result of research collaboration between the National Metal and Materials technology center (MTEC, NSTDA) and Sakun C innovation inc. to study a structural strength of a novel aluminum bus body with a view of commercialization. The prototype was the first of its kind being developed by the company. A Finite Element method was employed to determine structural strength of the 7-meter bus structure under static and dynamic loading conditions. Three different static conditions were considered i.e. lateral, longitudinal, and torsional loadings, whereas a rollover test according to UN R66 was used to study as dynamic conditions since such standard is being adopted by the Department of Land Transport regarding their bus structure registration approval procedure. The computational results revealed potential locations of structural weakness when subjected to external loads and was then used as a design guideline for a redesign and selection of cross-sectional profile for many structural members such as pillar, cant rail, and waist rail. Additionally, a resulting structure deformation obtained from the rollover simulation has led to further modification and reinforcement of the bus structure. Subsequently, the obtained prototype from this work passed a physical UN R66 rollover test at a test facility of Department of Land Transport. The prototype is now commercially available.
