Name

Thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones

Background

To increase the domestic usage of natural rubber (NR), Thai government encourage more rubber products in various applications such as rubber products for transportation (rubber milestone, rubber barrier).  This research aims to use natural rubber as one of the raw materials for traffic cones.  Normally, traffic cones are made from various types of thermoplastic such as Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Copolymer (EVA), Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC).   In this work, traffic cones that are made from thermoplastic natural rubber (TPNR), which are blends of natural rubber and thermoplastic that are dynamically vulcanized, have more rubberlike properties than thermoplastic traffic cones while still being processed and recyclable like thermoplastics.

Thermoplastic natural rubber was compounded by using Industrial-scale twin screw extruder and then was injection-molded into thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones.  Thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones are produced in the industrial scale, tested and commercialized at present.

Goal

Produce the thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones that are rubberlike and have comparable or higher impact properties than thermoplastic traffic cones

What does the research team do?

The research team prepared thermoplastic natural rubber by using industrial-scale twin screw extruder and injection-molded TPNR into thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones.  Then properties of thermoplastic natural rubber traffic cones were measured and found to meet the company’s standard.
